The algae lithothamne is commonly used as ingredient in organic plant-based milk alternatives, such as soy drinks, in order to increase their calcium content.
The wording of the current organic farming regulation, which remains unaltered in the Commission’s proposal for a new regulation, has led to legal uncertainty as to whether plant milk produced with lithothamne can be labelled as organic.
The EVU proposes, therefore, to explicitly mention the algae lithothamne in the Organic Farming Regulation.
